TAMPA, FL — Several HCA Healthcare West Florida Division hospitals are hosting “Crush The Crisis” opioid education and take back events with local law enforcement agencies on Saturday, October 23.   The annual events align with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and invites patients and community members to safely and anonymously dispose of unused or expired prescription medications.

“Opioid addiction is a national crisis and one that locally is affecting the health of the communities we serve,” said Ravi Chari, MD, President of HCA Healthcare West Florida Division.  “This is just one of several projects we are actively involved with to support local collaborative approaches to address the serious threat of opioid misuse.”

Local law enforcement officers at each of the “Crush The Crisis” locations will be will be collecting tablets, capsules and patches of Hydrocodone (Norco, Lortab, Vicodin), Oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percocet), Tramadol (Ultram), Codeine, Fentanyl (Duragesic), Morphine, Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) and Oxymorphone (Opana). All medications are accepted.  Items that will not be accepted include needles, syringes, lancets, inhalers or liquids. COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place at the events, including masking and social distancing.

HCA Healthcare West Florida Division is actively involved with Tampa Bay Thrives and Project Opioid Tampa Bay.  HCA hospitals along the west coast of Florida provide a wide range of mental health services to the communities served, including Memorial Hospital of Tampa’s The Oasis, an inpatient substance abuse program located at the Tampa Community Hospital campus. HCA hospitals in the West Florida Division have also adopted progressive clinical practices including Enhanced Surgical Recovery (ESR), which is a multi-modal approach to pain management that has demonstrated significant improvements in surgical recovery and a drastic reduction in the use of opioids for post-operative pain relief.

To further help combat the nation’s opioid crisis, HCA Healthcare proudly partners with and provides clinical insight to the National Academy of Medicine’s (NAM) Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic. HCA Healthcare has committed $750,000 to the Collaborative to support the development of safer pain management protocols and reversal of the opioid crisis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 70.630 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2019, with more than 70% percent attributed to opioids.
